Day 073: Glacier Bay National Park — Blue Ice Bigger Than Buildings

· di4ztravel

Blue Ice Bigger Than Buildings & Coco Wears Parka

Glacier Bay is different from a normal port day: there is no town or dock. The experience happens from the ship as National Park Service rangers board and guide passengers through glaciers, wildlife and protected waterways.

Quick facts

  • Port type: Cruise-only national park experience.
  • Season: Alaska cruise season, May–September.
  • Highlights: Margerie Glacier, Grand Pacific, Lamplugh, Johns Hopkins viewpoints, humpback whales, eagles, otters and bears.
  • Cruise lines: Holland America, Princess, Celebrity, NCL and Carnival.

Coco’s Glacier Bay day

The source itinerary begins around 6am as the ship enters the park, with ranger commentary, glacier viewing and wildlife watch throughout the day. Margerie Glacier is the central highlight, followed by whale and eagle spotting, a hot-cocoa-and-king-crab lunch theme, then late-day blue-ice scenery and alpenglow.
