Day 037: Where River Meets Sea & Coco Found Tubing — Palomino, Colombia

· di4ztravel

Palomino, Colombia is the one spot on Colombia’s Caribbean coast where snowmelt from the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta — the world’s highest coastal mountain range, topping out at 5,775 meters — rolls all the way down the Palomino River and empties straight into the turquoise sea. Coco found an inner tube and decided that’s exactly how a monkey should arrive at the beach.

Quick Facts

  • No dock in Palomino — arrive by tuk-tuk or a short walk to the 6km bohemian beach
  • Palomino River tubing: about 2 hours, confirm current pricing with the operator, mountains-to-sea through the jungle
  • From Santa Marta: about 2 hours by road, confirm the fare with the operator
  • Both COP and USD accepted around town
  • The river is considered sacred by the Kogui people, who still live in the surrounding Sierra Nevada
  • 6km of bohemian beach lined with hammocks, tent camps, and coconut palms
  • Arepa de huevo (fried egg-stuffed arepa) with current prices confirmed locally, plus fresh fish and patacones
  • Quebrada Valencia waterfall — a jungle hike and swim nearby
